Assignment #2 (to be done in class on Wednesday, December 2)
Put a line between Assignment #1 and Assignment #2.
Read chapter two.
On your student page ABOVE assignment #1, choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
Find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
Write the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
In a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing.
Suspense:
1. A little shiver passed down Vera's back. What on earth was the woman afraid of?
2. The sea that dragged you down to its depths. Drowned....Found drowned....Drowned at sea....Drowned--drowned--drowned ... No she wouldn't remember...She would not think of it! All that was over.....
3. Funny the way they all eyed each other--as if they knew.....
4. Her tight lips closed. She shut the Bible. Rising, she pinned a cairngorm brooch at her neck, and went down to dinner.
The first sentence I wrote from And Then There Were None, works well with showing suspense because it is talking about Mrs.Rodgers and how she looks, and it shows that she is kind of a creepy lady. People say that she looks like she is afraid of something so the suspense would be asking to yourself what is she so afraid of. It gives you a thought of suspense because it could be a million reasons of what she is afraid of and it makes you think about what has been happening on Indian Island. The second sentence shows suspense because Vera Claythorne had a bad past that sounds like it had to do with the sea, so she is saying to herself don't think of the time about drowning. The sentence makes you wonder about what had happened to her that had to do with the sea and drowning. It also makes you think about if they will explain it in the future chapters. The third sentence shows suspense because it is talking about all the people on the island and how they look at each other. It gives you a feeling of suspense because the last part of it says "as if they knew", and that makes me ask the question as if they knew what? It makes me want to keep on reading and find out what happened to all of them, how it corrosponds to how they are all alike in a way, and why they are all on the island. The last sentence that I found in the book shows a feeling of suspense because the old lady was reading a passage from the bible but then when she stops it says her tight lips closed and she shut the bible. It makes you wonder what she is thinking or what did the bible passage mean? All of these sentences show suspense that make you want to keep on reading to find out what is going on between all of them.
Maggie-
Good quotes and reasons for choosing them. Now work on cleaning up your paragraph. By rereading it, you will find some of your own mistakes. Look for accuracy in spelling, sentence structure, and consistency in verb tense. Try not to use 'the first sentence, the second sentence, the third sentence', etc. Using transitional phrases will help with that. You might have to break it into two paragraphs.

how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?
how might the title be a clue to the story?
1. A mystery book differs from a narrative because a mystery is basically solving something in the book and looking for clues. A narrative book is where someone is telling the story and it has a narrator.
2. The title might be a clue because it could be saying there was a lot of something, but then something happened or disappeared which brought it down to none. Maggie- Your answers are short, but accurate. There are more ways that a narrative differs from a mystery story. Could a mystery novel have a narrator? Mmmm...just a thought!
